Nor/Cen Cal - Sat July 12 - North Monastery - COMPLETE!

Postby dshorwich » Sun Jun 01, 2014 8:47 am

Join us for our annual shore survey of North Monastery beach in Carmel!

When: Saturday July 12, meeting up at 8:30 AM

Monastery beach is located just off Route 1 in Carmel, about 1/2 mile north of the entrance to Pt Lobos. The northern half of the site is known for its easy access to the deep waters of the Carmel canyon, but we'll be staying in the shallows of the kelp bed. Because the site is rather small, we do 6 core transects only here, no additional fish transects. If we have enough people turn out we can get the site done in 1 dive and then go for a fun dive afterwards.

As you all likely know, Monastery beach has little protection from the prevailing surge and swell, and the short steep beach can make entries and exits here, er, interesting when the surf is up. I will monitor conditions in the days leading up to the survey, and if it looks like conditions are going to be unfavorable we'll reschedule and look for a better day.

Park on the side of Rte 1 at the north end of the beach. There's a restroom at the southern end. Bring 2 tanks, and your survey gear. You can get free fills at Bamboo Reef or Aquarius Del Monte in Monterey, Aqua Safaris in Santa Cruz, or Diver Dan's in Santa Clara.
