Reef Checkers,
Its time for our spring survey of Middle Reef in Point Lobos Marine Reserve. This is favorite location for many of us because of its beauty both underwater and above the surface. We will be shore diving and there is a rather long surface swim for much of site, but you have plenty of harbor seals to converse with on your way out. We have reservations for 10 divers or 5 buddy teams. All fees are waived. Because we have a limited number of spots people that are certified for two or more transects will be given priority. We will survey this site in September as well to get a look at seasonal variability.

What: 2 survey dives of Middle Reef

When: Thursday May 16th, meet at 9am. Let me know if you all are going to need to get fills in the morning and I'll make the meeting time at 9:30am. It is much easier to organize the survey when we all arrive at the same time.

Where: Meet at Whalers Cove. Point Lobos is located three miles south of Carmel on Highway 1. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source= ... 15&iwloc=A

What to bring: YOUR DIVING Cert-CARD (they will not let you in without it), 2 full tanks, all dive and survey gear including a working light, snacks, water, and warmth. You can get free fills at Seven Seas, Aquarius, Bamboo Reef, Aqua Safaris, and Diver Dan's with your Reef Check cards.

Why: We love diving and we love healthy, well-managed reefs.

Thanks to everyone who came out for our spring survey of Middle Reef. It was a beautiful day once the sun came out, and the surface was flat calm. Reports were of excellent visibility and of lots of large rockfishes! The long surface swim was minimized with the help of Erich's zodiac... thanks Erich! With our team of 10 we were able to do the entire site other than one fish-only transect. Great job everyone! And special thanks to Keith who came back the following day (while doing REEF surveys) to finish that last transect. The site is complete! All in all it was a wonderful day in one of the prettiest places on the central coast. Can't to return for our fall surveys of Middle Reef and Weston Reef in September!

Thanks for all you do.
Cheers,
Megan
