Calling all divers!

Join us for a survey at the Casino Point Avalon Dive Park. It's always a fun island day!

Here are the details:

Meet near the dive park lockers at 8:30 AM on Saturday July 13. Please plan accordingly but if your boat arrives slightly later just meet us there and we will work you into the survey!

Bring all your dive equipment, snacks, water and survey gear (you can rent tanks and weights at the dive park if you don't want to schlep your own to the island - don't forget your cert card for rentals and tank fills.) I will provide all of the data sheets!

Who doesn’t love Catalina? You can plan to make a day of it - once we complete our survey do a few fun dives with your buddy! Or spend the weekend on the island with your family and meet us for these Saturday morning dives. As most of you know, the dive park is a beautiful dive site. Plus, it's probably one of the easiest shore dives you will do- so get yourself over to the island and join us for a great day!

You will want to make ferry reservations as soon as possible to make sure you have a space on the boat.

!!! NOTE: Make sure you are checking the June-September schedule!!!

Thank you for all that you do for Reef Check!

I'm going to try to jump in on this one, for some great diving and a fish checkout.

Hi - My husband (Mark Brown) and I just completed the Monterey Reefcheck training and we would like to get certified in invertebrates. Will there be an instructor along at the Catalina Casino Point Survey who could do our certification if we come down for the surveys?

Plus, it'd be great to do surveys in Catalina!

Hi Julie and Mark,
I will be at the survey and I'm Megan's counterpart down here. I'm an instructor and I'm already going to be doing fish survey checkouts with two of our veteran divers sometime that day. If you just need to do invertebrates, I can most likely do that on one of our core transects for the survey with no problem. I assume you are checked out in UPC and algae? If so, you could be a big help on the survey and we should be able to do the invert check out, as well. Let me know! It's a beautiful site.

Thanks, Colleen

Hey divers,
Just a reminder to buy your Catalina Express tickets sometime soon. That's the height of the summer season for Catalina and tickets may sell out! I just purchased my tickets today!

I will be at the dive park, ready to begin our pre-dive briefing, at 8:30 am. I'll be doing a site briefing, assigning tasks and getting ready for a fun day of diving! It's probably best to try to meet there at 8:30 if you've never been to this site before, especially if you are trying to get checked out on some skills. If you are a veteran Reef Checker and have done this site with us numerous times, it's probably ok to get there a tiny bit later.

Getting excited for this survey!

Hi Colleen - Mark and I are checked out on UPC only. During the training in Monterey, I wasn't able to do the third dives each day because of being chilled, between cold water temps (52 degrees and we have wetsuits) and the open decks and long between-dive waits on the Monterey Express - we even bought new surfer coats and they weren't quite doing the trick for me:-). And I tend to be a little too slow and methodical still on the surveys, so I got too low on air on the dive in which we were supposed to go on to complete the algae transect (if I'm remembering correctly), so we had to surface; Mark goes much more quickly than I do, but since he's my buddy, he surfaced with me. Anyway, unfortunately, we aren't yet checked out on algae, just UPC. Part of the reason coming to Catalina is attractive is the water temps are a bit warmer - we've done a lot of our diving out at the Channel Islands.

Anyway, if we can be helpful, and pick up another certification, would love to come to the Channel Islands on July 13.

Julie

Let's plan on having you two join is for more practice on the other transects. It should work out well!

Hi Bill, yes- we would love to have you join us at the Casino Point dive! Since it is a shore dive the more people we have the better. Thank you so much for signing up!
