Calling all divers!

Join us for a survey at the Avalon Dive Park/Casino Point. It's always a fun day!

Here are the details:

Saturday June 16th:
Meet near the dive park lockers at 8:30 am (if your boat arrives slightly later just meet us there and we will work you into the survey). You are going to want to be on an early boat to make the most of the day. I will be there earlier if you are on that 6:15 am boat so we can get some teams in the water first thing.

Bring all your dive gear and survey gear (you can rent tanks and weights at the dive park if you don't want to schlep yours to the island - don't forget your c-card for rentals and/or tank fills).

We will provide plenty of data sheets! Don't forget your snacks/water (or grab lunch at the cafe near the casino)!

Who wants to join this survey? I'm personally very excited about it. I hope you can help us with another successful fall survey.

Make a day of it - once we complete our survey, plan to do a few fun dives with your buddy. Or spend the weekend on the island with your family and meet us for these Saturday morning dives. As most of you know, the dive park is a beautiful dive site. Plus, it's probably one of the easiest shore dives you will do, so get yourself over to the Island and join us for a great day.

You may want to make ferry reservations as soon as possible to make sure you have a space on the boat since June can get pretty busy. Here's some information on ferry times for that weekend - just make sure you are checking the June schedule (here are some current June departures - Long Beach Downtown Landing at 6:15 and 8:30 am; San Pedro at 8 am; and Dana Point at 7:45 am): http://www.catalinaexpress.com/scheduleFares.php

Reply to this post if you plan to join us for this fun and beautiful dive. I will update this post with a list of divers as I get replies. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

The team: (as of June 10th)
1.) Colleen
2.) Brianne
3.) Ron W
4.) Ted
5.) Edie W
6.) Alan H.
7.) Claes N
8.) Connie

Hi Colleen,
I will be there, and I'll bring my son along for some fun dives also.

So glad we've got such a nice little team for this survey!

Just a reminder - if you haven't made your reservations on the Catalina Express yet, you may want to do that asap. It is a summer weekend with a holiday thrown in (Father's Day), so the boats are likely to be full.

We will meet you by the lockers at the dive park, ready to dive!

Go team!

Hi Colleen:
This is a followup to our conversation.
I cannot make Casino Pt. this Saturday.
That is a RC Training day at the Aquarium.
Thanks,
Dirk

A huge thanks to the team that made the trek over to Avalon for this weekend's survey of Casino Point!

It was a great day on the island. The conditions were pretty good - a little hazy underwater, but still pretty great. The garibaldis were out in full force, guarding their nests and I got bit by two different males during my survey. I wasn't even harrassing them! I've noticed a resurgence of pink and green abalone on the island in recent months - I saw several on my survey dives and I know Team Walker did a 3rd fun dive on Saturday and poked around in the shallows for a while and found over 24 of them! Amazing! I'm also always surprised by how large the kelp bass get here - I sometimes mistake them for baby harbor seals underwater!

The team worked well together and we completed most of the survey on dive one. Everyone hopped back in on dive two with a short list of tasks each so we had plenty of time to explore for fun afterwards.

Thanks again to everyone - we couldn't have done it without you! Hope to see you on another survey soon!
