The International Year of the Reef had a great start with Reef Check Malaysia invited by WWF Malaysia to work in partnership with them in their Semporna Island Project in Sabah. Part of this project is to involve local communities and stakeholders to sustainably manage their reefs through a monitoring programme, i.e. Reef Check. A total of 19 representatives from 7 Dive Centres around the Semporna Islands, WWF Malaysia, and Sabah Parks were trained and certified to be EcoDivers at Mabul Island. Few of them were also interested to be EcoDiver Trainers in the near future. Reef Check Malaysia will continue to work with WWF to set up a survey programme and train more EcoDivers to be involved in this project.
Reef Check Malaysia will also be celebrating the success of 2007 as well as launching Reef Check Malaysia officially on the 19th Feb 2008. It will be an opportunity to get some media coverage and introducing Reef Check to potential sponsors. So, it will be a busy year ahead but it's great for the reefs!!
