Last week, a large group of people from Dumaguete, Dauin and Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental, Philippines had the honour of being trained as reef check eco-divers by Gregor Hodgson, the director of Reef Check and respected scientist. The training was organized in memory of Nick Karr, how lost his life diving on the reefs he loved and wanted to protect. The participants consisted of students and teachers from Silliman University Marine Lab, employees of Marine Conservation Philippines, dive instructors and dive masters from Bongo Bongo Divers and Sidlakan Divers. Out of this training a large group (+/-20 people) arose that would like to continue surveying the Negros Oriental coast. We will need some practice still, but we are really looking forward to contributing to the conservation of both local and world wide coral reefs through the improvement of our knowledge and understanding of them.
