SoCal: MLPA adoption hearing in Santa Barbara Dec 15!!

Postby Colleen Wisniewski » Fri Dec 03, 2010 2:54 pm

Public Hearing Set for 9 am at the Mar Monte Hotel

The CA Fish & Game Commission will vote in Santa Barbara on Wed Dec 15 on an array of marine protected areas for southern California –including ocean protection zones for the Santa Barbara area – at a final adoption hearing in Santa Barbara at the Mar Monte Hotel (1111 East Cabrillo Blvd on Santa Barbara’s waterfront). The public hearing begins at 9am and public comment is encouraged. The two year process of negotiation, science and economic review and dozens of hearings heavily engaged in by Santa Barbarans will result on December 15 with a final vote on the size and location of marine protected areas, which are no-harvest zones intended to restore and rebuild ocean wildlife resources. Efforts to create marine protected areas in the US originated largely in local efforts to protect Channel Islands wildlife by creating the then largest US network of marine protected areas at the Islands.
