06.09.18 Coral St - COMPLETE

Postby dabbott » Thu Apr 19, 2018 10:37 am

***Update***

The site was half done on 6.9.18. Looking for a few divers to help finish!

Join us for our spring survey of Coral St!

Coral St is located towards the end of the peninsula, in Pacific Grove, at the intersection of Oceanview Blvd. and Coral St. The site has little protection from the prevailing wind and swell, so if it looks like it's going to be too rough we'll reschedule if need be.

Coral St has become an urchin barren. It used to have a thick kelp mat over the summer, but last year the kelp was gone, and the urchins were out in abundance - we counted exactly one (1) giant kelp plant on the 6 core transects of the spring survey, and the fall survey was similar. It'll be interesting to see what it looks like this year.

So, we'll meet up at 8:00 AM on Saturday June 9th; park along Oceanview Blvd, more or less across the street from 1209 Oceanview. Bring 2 tanks, your survey gear, and whatever else you need for your surface interval. Note there are no bathroom facilities at the site.

Who's in? (please sign your posts when you reply)
1. David H (Survey Captain)
2. Robert (Serious Reefchecker) Kugel
3. John (weekend-only) Bates
4. Linda (not-so-serious) Reefchecker
5. Gary Henry (probably in given current work schedule)
6. Laura Allen (survived the training)
7.
...
25.

The forecast isn't looking beautiful, but sometimes you get lucky (and sometimes not, of course). We do have a couple of fallback options if Coral is a no-go, either starting on Macabee or finishing up Breakwater.

So we'll see...

Hi David,
I'm planning to work on the fish surveys at the breakwater starting about 7 am. Hopefully I'll have 3 m of vis., but I plan to do them anyway for practice. Can you let me know if you head to MacAbee or the breakwater?
