***Miscellaneous Volunteer opportunities*** (1 activity)

Postby dabbott » Mon May 15, 2017 4:00 pm

Hi Reefcheckers,

I made this post as a place to put various Reef Check tasks that need to be done but don't fall within our normal survey schedule. Any of the tasks listed here any Reefchekcer who is qualified can complete without the supervision of Reef Check staff or volunteer Data Captains. My hope is that some of you see this work that needs to be done, buddy up, and go get 'er done!

If you are interested in helping out with any of these tasks post a reply here and/or send me an email (dabbott@reefcheck.org) and we'll go from there.

Work that needs to be done:

Ocean looks reeeally flat for this weekend. I've got a couple of kayaks and now getting tanks filled. Who'd be in for clean-ups of Aquarium and Lovers?

Here are a couple of things you might need. The site sheets for all of the Monterey sites and our datasheets. You'll need a laser printer (and of course) waterproof paper to print them up. For the site sheets not I don't normally put the FOT on there, just the cores, but if look at the site layout sheet you can see how the FOT relate to the cores.

Also there is a Reef Check locker at Bamboo Reef on Lighthouse that has datasheets, urchin calipers, tapes, etc. I'm going put copies of the site sheets in there soon. The combo is 2995.

Help needed completing recent surveys at Otter Cove and MacAbee beach. The end date for these must be on or before July 1st.

*Otter Cove is NOT very accessible from shore, you can, but it is a long swim (1/2 mile and must be at high tide), so it is best to do this by a kayak or boat. The transect needed is only core 3.
*MacAbee beach is easily accessible from shore and it is a short swim. The transect needed is core 3.

Contact Dan Abbott for details and to coordinate.

I will try to cleanup MacAbee core 3 tomorrow if I can get there early and find a parking spot.

Update:
I could not get to proper depth for core 3 and visibity was few meters. I did see cabazone, greenling and harassed by 3 sea lions :)

I will try again this Sat 24th for core 3 of MacAbee. the high tide is at noon so slack high is after 2 pm but I rather get the dive done in the morning.
I can use a dive buddy this time.

There are 4 fish-only transects at Coral St to be completed by August 22: fish #9, 10, 11, 12

These are all on the outer half of the site. Fish 9 should be @ 30-35' at avg tide, fish 10-12 @ 20-25'. Heading 90/270.

If you're not familiar with the site or where the survey area is, drop me or Dan a line and we'll get you a map.

Brian and I will take a shot at cleaning up Coral Street this weekend(8/5/2017). I don't have any data sheets but I'll swing by Bamboo Reef to see if there are any in the locker.

Update: Brian and I completed Coral St. yesterday (8/5/2017). Four fish transects done.

There are 4 fish-only transects left to be done at Breakwater, by Sept. 4.

The transects are #13, 14, 15, 18. These are all on the inner half of Middle Reef, thus rather shallow, so I recommend doing them nearer to high tide than low. On the plus side, they're a very short swim from shore.

#18 is the innermost/rightmost transect (rightmost standing on the beach looking out), and should be at 10-15'. #13, 14, 15 should be at 15-20'.

Headings: 140/320.

The remaining fish-only transects at Coral St and Breakwater have been done; both sites are now complete.

Thanks, Camilla, Brian, and Keith!

incomplete:

Weston cores 2 and 5
Middle Reef FOT 7,8,17,18.

Vince Christian and I will attempt Middle Reef on 9/12. Done.

Only Weston remains and it must be done by boat with special permission from the state park. Dan Abbott to organize a clean up dive, stay tuned.
